What is an Orthopedic Spine Surgeon?
An Orthopedic Spine Surgeon has specialized training in the field of surgical and non-surgical diseases and conditions of all levels of the spine, including cervical, thoracic, lumbar, and sacroiliac regions.
Personally, I completed my medical education in 1981. After completion of my Orthopedic surgery residency and spinal surgery fellowship, I began practice at Lake Forest Orthopedic in 1987. This, along with my experience since 1987, allows me to assist and educate people in the care and understanding of their musculoskeletal conditions. I have stayed current by continuing my medical education and have been active in the Medical Staff at Lake Forest Hospital including Chairman of the Surgery Department.
What type of problems do Orthopedic Spine Surgeons commonly treat?
As a member of this specialty group of board certified and fellowship-trained physicians, I focus on the care and treatment of all musculoskeletal conditions Evaluation and treatment are offered to all age groups. My spectrum of treatment includes thorough, convenient office evaluations, conservative non-surgical therapies, and surgical alternatives. Improving my patient’s quality of life remains my primary focus. Some of the common spine problems I treat include:
• Cervical and lumbar disc disorders
• Spinal stenosis
• Arthritis of the spine
• Scoliosis
• Acute and chronic neck and low back pain
There are some conditions that are best treated surgically, after conservative treatment has failed. Common examples of spinal surgery include:
• Microdiscectomy
• Cervical discectomy and fusion
• Cervical and lumbar laminectomy
• Fusion of the cervical and lumbar spine
Do Orthopedic Spine Surgeons treat general Orthopedic problems?
Yes. Whereas much of my interest and experience involves spinal disorders, I also treat general Orthopedic conditions. I work diligently to understand peoples’ needs and strive to help them achieve desired outcomes. Some of the common general orthopaedic problems I treat include:
• Joint replacement of the hip and knee
• Fracture care, both surgical and non-surgical
• Osteoarthritis
• Treatment of traumatic disorders of joints, tendons, and ligaments
