Orthopedic Surgery

What is an Orthopedic Spine Surgeon?

A physician with specialized training in the field of surgical and non-surgical diseases and conditions of the spine.  An Orthopedic Spine Surgeon focuses on all levels of the spine, including cervical, thoracic, lumbar, and sacroiliac regions.

A physician with a primary specialty in Orthopedic Surgery who obtains  additional training in Spinal Surgery through an accredited fellowship (subspecialty) program in Spinal Surgery.  Additional forums, which add to the expertise of an Orthopedic Spine Surgeon, include continuing education in spinal surgery and membership and participation in orthopaedic and spinal surgery societies.

What type of problems do Orthopedic Spine Surgeons commonly treat?

Orthopedic Spine Surgeons treat a wide variety of both surgical and non-surgical spinal diseases and conditions.  Common examples of problems that I see are:

• Cervical and lumbar disc disorders
• Spinal stenosis
• Arthritis of the spine
• Scoliosis
• Acute and chronic neck and low back pain

I often see conditions that are best treated surgically, either initially or after conservative treatment has failed.  Common examples of spinal surgery include:

• Microdiscectomy
• Cervical discectomy and fusion
• Cervical and lumbar laminectomy
• Fusion of the cervical and lumbar spine
• Cervical Disc Replacement
• Partial Joint Replacement - Surface replacement

Do Orthopedic Spine Surgeons treat general Orthopedic problems?

Yes.  Since my education as an Orthopedic Spine Surgeon includes extensive training in general Orthopedic, I am well suited for treating general orthopaedic problems in patients of all ages, such as:

• Joint replacement of the hip, knee, and elbow
• Hand surgery, such as limited incision carpal tunnel surgery
• Fracture care, both surgical and non-surgical
• Treatment of traumatic disorders of joints, tendons, and ligaments
• Osteoarthritis
